Spent hundreds of hours over the last few years locating campsites from Goldsboro to Raleigh. Many maps & regimental histories .Have located 6 of them, hunted 3,but this is the only spot that I actually found things that verified my research. These were 1 day camps.

1st found a bullet 3 yrs. ago but was unable to get back to this site until few weekends ago(twice). The area is now being developed so I was fortunate to make these finds before it will be lost to history. I made this plaque & nailed it to a tree. Finds include 1st gold coin ever($1 Charlotte),a bazaar 1/2 a bullet(can anyone explain that ?)& a Williams cleaner w/zinc insert removed(unique to Sherman's army after research)& the longest Black snake I have ever come across! This was a wing that comprised 4 regiments & this spot was obviously where a group was stationed to guard the river crossing leading towards the main area of the campsite.

Wow !! Great finds ! Great post ! Thanks for sharing your adventure. Love the coins no question, but I really love the Sherman camp marker you made. That's unique & really pays homage to Sherman & his men. Just a suggestion....replace the galvy nails with stainless steel nails.
CONGRATS !!

wow, such great saves. your research and perseverance really paid off. those coins are just awesome! well done

Congrats on the gold coin and the fine research!

About the half bullet... Perhaps the greatest enemy of soldiers in camp is boredom. I suspect there was no specific purpose or use intended for the half. Likely just a bored soldier killing time. Maybe a he was testing the sharpness of his knife?

Congratulations on that research paying off! Awesome saves and really cool idea to post that sign. Gold Coin is a Banner vote from me :notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:

Wow, finding gold is tough, but, Charlotte gold is even harder to find! Nice! :icon_thumleft:

This is how often I get on here.....8 mths later!I'm into the research & history almost as much as finding the stuff.I memorialized it w/the only things I could find in a friends garage.A beer can & I was lucky to find even these nails!

something, maybe gunpowder?I've found them carved as game pieces(w/what looks like a face carved in it),dice & even a precussion cap nipple protector.this isn't as obvious as those.
