Got out this morning and again took my time looking for any good signals to pop through the square nail blanket at a 1700’s cellar hole. I dug a bunch of square nails which is so frustrating but did not give up. Ended up a very good morning with a bunch of buttons, one of which is a Revolutionary War Continental Army soldiers button. This is a small pewter button that I am amazed has survived being buried all these years.

Those look like oldies, around 18th or early 19th century. I would expect to see lettering impressed on their backs, with a word like "GILT" and sometimes the manufacturing company name.

What a great USA button! Soak the Dandies in lemon juice for 30 seconds and see if any gilding shows up.

the button is pewter and I’m afraid it will fall apart if I brush it. I did a light brush when recovered and did not see any writing on the back. I need to figure out how to preserve it tomorrow. Any recommendations?

I wouldn't do anything to that pewter USA button unless you're very very sure of the outcome, it's worth a bit of money, I would try and find an expert for advice or to stabilised it for you.

I'm not that expert but I did take a look on the internet to try and see what one was worth, can you give a size of it, they had bigger ones and small ones?

To preserve your USA button, you can mix up a 60/40 solution Water/Elmers Glue. Mix it well and brush it on the button. Let dry and apply a second coat. You can practice on a junk piece of dug pewter if you would like to get a comfort level with this process.

A U.S.A. Button has been on my bucket list for years. So far, it has eluded me. Congratulations on a great find!
