OMG I'm an odd duck- not because i md

some in my family think I am an odd duck. 1 never been to a starbucks: 2 never tried one of those 5hr energy drinks: 3 don't like most comedys; instead prefer historical dramas: 4 have never had a sat and sun off back to back in 40+ working years: 5 would rather find an IHC than a gold ring:6 my ultimate dream car a jeep wrangler. I didn't know. whats your oddities? hopefully I'm not alone.

You're not alone.
Basically I'm the same as you, work 6 days a week. I don't take sick days, unless I'm in the hospital.
I love our F150 4X4 wouldn't take any car free to replace it.
Not fond of TV unless is historical or a documentary.

I guess treasure hunters are a different type of people.

And I "am" considered the family nut (by all of them) for detecting! Lol!

thanks for your vote msbeepbeep who wants to be normal. we live for adventure and the road less traveled

I ain't odd. I'm eccentric!

I have never used an ATM (refuse to). Only reason I have a cell phone is because my employer supplies it to me (and pays for it). Raise chickens, turkeys and sheep. Eat all three. Hunt deer with a 1964 recurve bow with wood arrows (that I make myself) and broadheads that were made in 1960. Won't drink canned or "lite" beer. My fishing boat has a gaff sail. Often wear a straw skimmer hat when out on the boat. Have never watched Survivor or a reality TV show. Our TV has a deep picture tube and has a 19" diagonal screen.

Meh.... not so odd.

1) I've been to Starbucks, you're not missing anything.... waaayyyy over-priced and only "good" if you like bitter dark roast coffee.

2) Never tried one either, and no desire to.

3) I *do* like comedies but NOT the Will Ferrell/Jim Carrey foolishness... *good* comedies, like Robin Williams (RIP). History Channel is my favorite TV channel, along with Oasis, Discovery, and Nat Geo.

4) I do like a nice weekend, and long weekends even more *G*

5) I haven't ever found either so either one will be great when and if.

6) I love Jeeps... but very expensive here and hard on gas. My pick would be the 4-door Wrangler if cash wasn't an issue.

On the face of it I think MD'ers and TH'ers are "odd" anyway... we'll spend $30 on gas and $10 on lunch to go hunt somewhere, find $5 in clad and some grotty old artifacts and think it was a "great day". *L* But so what? Could be a lot worse!

stick to your guns charlie p: I am and HH in all your pursuits.

Hello,

Great Thread! I too love metal detecting and have for many years. Many relatives and friends say “why do you do that…?” They usually change their “tune” when they see some of my historical, silver, gold and coins found. Then they say “take me out next time”. I say sure be at my house next Saturday at 5:00 am…silence. I guess they think the items just jump into my finds bag when I walk through an area.

I did own a Jeep Wrangler, bought it new and put over 200k on it, boy I miss that vehicle.

Regards,

I absolutely love the silence of 5am when detecting!
5am usually means I'm late. ;)
Peace ✌

I'm with ya Mudslinger - Never been in a Starbucks, never tried those energy bars / drinks. I have worked in the same field for over 30 years. I can't stand fiction, my family talks about those fantasy films and books, give me a great non-fiction book, or something about History!

Nope, you're NOT alone.
I'm the strange one in my family because:
(1) I NEVER get enough time exploring the outdoors.
(2) Never been to Star bucks, and don't plan on it.
(3) I call my cats kitties, my dogs doggies, still play with frogs and bugs. LOL:laughing7:
(4) I prefer to fix my SUV myself instead of taking it to a shop...
it is now 14 yrs old w/244,000 miles on it.
(5) AND, yes... why would I want to be on my knees diggin up stuff from the ground???
LOL
That is only the beginning...
Not much TV at all, either...

I'm retired, but have raised chickens, beef cattle and horses, but haven't knowingly eaten horse meat. I like history, muzzle loading firearms, metal detecting old stuff, quit smoking tobacco 50 years ago, never had a puff of dope, don't even know what it smells like, like my coffee boiled with the grounds in it over a camp fire, screw starbucks, it's overpriced and bitter, Watch Fox News or history/Smithsonian/outdoor channel, and I've been known to hunt deer with a sinew backed long bow with wood arrows I made myself. My arrows are painted white with white feathers and a red cock feather, because that's the color arrows Howard Hill used in the movie "Tembo" when I was a young teenager. Like to read history, usually primary source material. So yeah, I'm an odd duck, most people don't like to travel or camp with me, because I love to find out what's on the other side of the hill, or down in the canyon. The only jeep I've owned was a Waggonier, with a Chevy 327 motor and a pto winch. Man did I go places with that vehicle. Anyhow, fond memories.

I refuse to text.

I'm 60-ish and...
I've never had any kind of coffee at all...I drink hot black tea...(I come from an Irish-American family)
I've never been drunk, (have a Guinness now and then, though).
Never used a ATM.
I've only owned three vehicles in my life.
I've only lived in three houses in my life.
I've never lived or worked more then ten miles from where I was born.
I married the first and only girl I ever asked for a date and we've been together forty years.
I've never written a personal check...(Wife of forty years spends it all).
I've been to eleven job interviews in my life and got hired all eleven times and all eleven companies went out of business after hiring me!, (unemployed right now).
I've never driven a Ford or a Chrysler product.
Never had a broken bone or a headache.
Never baked anything.
Never had sushi, crab, or lobster.

BUT....I did win an argument with a woman once, who could ask for more in life!

Gee, where to start? I watch a few football games on tv, almost nothing else. I spend a lot of time on the computer, here on TNet for a lot of that time. I've never been in a Starbucks, but like my coffee, which I started drinking at the age of 38. I like to MD, but have COPD and don't get to do much of it; have 5 detectors. Love guns, love to tinker with them, have several, mostly .22s because they're cheaper to shoot and don't like recoil as I've grown older. Been retired since 2004. Done a lot of different jobs. Longest I've ever been out of work while job-searching, was about 14 days. Never drew unemployment. Have an old 1998 Grand Cherokee Laredo that I bought in 2010, has about 192K miles, but still runs great. Have only owned a 1977 Toyota and a 1984 Subaru for foreign cars; only US made car I haven't owned I guess is a Lincoln. Use an ATM only at my bank, seldom write a check when I can use a debit card. Wife and I moved a lot during our early years of marriage; but bought a place in 84 and lived there until she passed in 06 and I moved in 2007. Just say I'm old and odd.

hate starbucks, mexican food is terrible, waiting for a prffesional basketball team 5'6 tall players, also waiting for those hot shot hunters to take the scopes off there rifles too see how well they do. only like to deal in cash if i can, if throwin a baseball 90 miles an hour is a priority in your life i feel sorry for you. If you pay more than 30.00 dollars for a pair of sneakers, you need help.If you pay more than 10.00 for a bottle of wine you're an idiot, it's fermented grape juice and finally why is it it why does it take 7yrs later for the girl of you're dreams to tell what an a-h---- you are I am completley nuts and proud of it.

Yes, that's something else. I'm a 'cheapskate'. I wear the cheap Velcro closure 'tenny/athletic' shoes from Wally World, always looking for a 'bargain', won't spend much money, even on myself; unless it's something I 'need'. Do love Mexican food! Don't care for basketball, golf, soccer, or hockey. Will watch a few baseball games during the playoffs. Some football. Occasionally watch some Nascar, but have got kinda sick of the way it's regulated now. Don't like many fancy food dishes. If you want to make this ol' man happy, just give me a hamburger, some fries, and lots of Heinz ketchup. If I only had one kind of meat to eat all the time it would be hamburger.

We are not weird - we just know what we like, and don't care if someone else likes it or not.

I have been to a Starbucks, only because that was the only place to get a coffee - and I never went to another.
I am retired, so hubby and I have spent months at a time in the mountains of the southwest. (with an old fashion camp). We have "explored" in 47 states, including an entire summer in Alaska.

I took a 4 hour a week job, which turned into a 5 day a week job, and a cell phone is required, so I have one. We have 2 vehicles, one is a 4 wheel drive truck, one is a 4 wheel drive SUV. Both have over 180,000 miles.

History Channel runs at our house most of the time, or SyFy But, I do put on other programming - it makes it easier to fall asleep

We grow and can or freeze up all our own vegetables, apples, cherries and strawberries. Cannot remember the last time we bought veggies from a store, except when we go to the local farmers market to get a few things like blackberries and raspberries, which just won't grow here.

I still own the very first beach scoop that was patented - it was the prototype that my uncle made many, many years ago. It is one of my favorite possessions.

I don't usually watch much sports, but I always watch the Superbowl, the World Series, and the National Finals in Las Vegas (rodeo). We go searching and metal detecting any time we get a chance.

I am the originator of "SOCK COFFEE"

I appreciate threads like this, Mudslinger! Its nice to exchange some friendly words here in a forum where we all have something in common. That said, I don't do Facebook. Right here is my social media, and its about as personal as I care to get. I don't feel the need for Twitter or Facebook or whatever else silly bullpuckey they decide to invent next. I don't feel the need to tell everyone what I'm doing at any given time of day.

I like old John Deere garden tractors. I have five of them. As soon as I find one in suitable condition, I'll be getting one of the originals from the early '60s. Right now my oldest is a 1977, and my newest is a 1988. I work on them, restore them, and love them. They're my toys. My babies.

I've warned my wife and sister-in-law NOT to buy me any clothes or anything with the JD logo on it. Frivolous. Tacky. I'm not that ate up about it, lol. The only things I wear that have a logo is Carharrt clothing.

You mentioned work. I'm a hard worker, but I've never enjoyed working for anyone else. Imagine how hard that it is to have a career and work to support your family when you have a philosophy as such. Its from childhood. I've been paying federal taxes since I was 13 years old, and I've never ever once liked it. I just bit down hard and endured it. Weird, but its what I've had to live with. No amount of cognitive behavioral therapy has been able to shake it. Its hard to sustain a positive attitude when so many people in your life depend on the income that you make. So I do it with a smile on my face and find solace in my THing and tractor-wrenching. Oh, I like to fish and hunt once in a while too!

thanks for the replies everyone. I just dont like following the heard I guess and it seems others feel the same way. so from now on when my cousins call me an odd duck I will smile and say thank you for your praise. now if I can only be as lucky as AHAB and find something cool to shove in their face and say see what I found. hope its a pine tree coin or a 1901S barber quarter but would be happy with a handfull of spanish cobs. keep on with the hunt my friends.

Higgy, I'm kinda like you when it comes to working with others. I did for a long time, but since 1967, most of the work I've done was either by myself or with someone only if necessary. Also, I'm more a 'loner'. I enjoy being with other people that I like, but only for a while. I don't like being in the company of others for long periods of time. I'm more happy when I'm by myself, and with my dog, of course. A lot of times, I'd rather be alone, even without the little dog. Most people get on a treadmill and want to watch tv, listen to music, etc.; but I'd rather just look out the back door at the squirrels and birds. On the treadmill is where I do my best thinking. I spent most of my time in my bedroom when I'm at the house. If someone wants to see me, they can knock on my door. I don't 'shun' them, but just rather be alone.
