On my birthday I hunted an old boarded up house in my community and found a gold ring. They have since demolished the house, so I figured I would give it a hunt after supper. My community was built in 1918 for WW1 housing, so I figured it might be good for some silver and Wheat Pennies. I did manage three Wheat Pennies and the usual clad. I also found an unusual silver coin among the roots of a pine tree. It was too dirty and discolored to make out much, but it did look old. After a few minutes in electrolysis I took it out and checked the date. It was 1738!!! I thought I was going to have a heart attack !! It is my oldest silver coin EVER and in pretty good shape. I am still shaking !! What a great evening !!!

Congratulations. That is one great find!

That coin looks like it was never in circulation or dirt.
Congrats
The high points are very worn, so I wouldn't say 'never'.

That being said its a great find in a 1918 community!

Very nice looking coin. Congrats on your oldest silver. You gotta love the roots on trees. They are capable of hiding lots of goodies.

As unusual as it may seem, I was not totally surprised it came out of my community. I live in a community that was built on a farm owned by the Barklay family in the 1800s. They bought the farm from a man who owned it in the 1700s. I have hunted this neighborhood for over 40 years now. Up till now the oldest silver has been a 1805 Dime and a 1877 seated dime. I am a firm believer of hunting where the LAND is old, not what is there now. That philosophy has served me well over the years . Thanks for the comments and Happy Hunting!!

It goes to show you never know where old Spanish is going to appear. But you had a lot going for you in that area!

Wow, congrats

Awesome! Maybe it was in someones coin collection before it was lost.
