Older than my usual Kansas finds

Its almost rusted away to nothing. Most of the relics I find are well rusted, but not quite this much. There isn't much metal left.

I have permission on a wheatfield near the Santa Fe trail. But I can't dig until the wheat is harvested in July. I found this along the fence at the edge of the field. I'm dying to get started on it, I know there will be a lot of nice relics. The trail started in 1825 and that's pretty old for around here.

Is there anything in the style that would indicate it's age? or orgin ?

Could it be tool to clean horses hooves when reshoeing?

Oops, I guess I should have looked at that picture after I posted it
I hadn't thought of a surveyor's chain....Interesting.

Well, a little checking says it isn't a surveyors chain.

It's not like the horse bits I've seen. Maybe some other part of a harness?
