Hey Guys,

Sluice.jpg

This sluice was given to me by a co worker, it looks little old but it still seems like a good piece of equipment. Its quite large and could process a good bit of material the sluicing area is about 16 wide by 38 long. It came with some old miners moss. I was thinking about putting new miners moss in it and replacing the quick inspect portion with ribbed matting. Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks

I bet it still gets some gold! That was very nice of your friend.
Watch out you don't lose gold out the bottom of the miners moss. There is a thread here somewhere on it where someone explains why and provides a fix I think.
You're going to get the fever no doubt. :)
Also in before "get a Bazooka Gold Trap!" <3 (that's what I'd do.)

Sell it to raise money toward a Bazooka Prospector....no, really!

Thanks for the input guys I will definitly look for the thread on modifing the miners moss set up. I also appreciate the advice on the bazooka, but I already have an angus mackirk that im very happy with just thought I could use this one when I need to process a lot of material since its 16 inches wide.

just remember that the wider the sluice is, the more water you're going to need going through it. Other than that I'd say it is a great score! lol just don't go waving all those big nuggets under your co-workers nose. He might want his sluice back!!!

What you have is an old Promack 4" dredge box that has been converted to your sluice. This is a great dredge box and will be an excellent sluice. Just put ribbed under the miners moss and that will trap all of the gold. If you still have the green moss it should work fine, just put ribbed under it. You have the start of a fine dredge with that box. Buy a flare, get a motor and get some real gold! Go dredge with it

Hey guys I finished refurbishing the sluice thought I post a picture for you to see. I installed 6 inches of ribbed matting and put verdana outdoor carpet underneath the armour weave. Let me know what you guys think

Go get it wet! :)

Sweeeeeeet..........

Nice job on the retrofit, looks ready for the creek!

Be sure to use a safety pan below the sluice until you learn how best to set it up.

Well guys I put her to the test today 12 buckets worth of classified material. She definitely catches gold found a lot of nice flakes during clean up. Only problems I seemed to have was the first riffle before the armour weave clogged up all the time its would not clear the rocks out even though I classified to 1/4 inch. I had to stick my hand in there and clear it out, i tried increasing the angle and water flow but nothing seemed to help. Over all though good first run, just heavy as heck sucks to hike it in. Ill keep you guys posted.

That's normal because it causes the water to jump up unless you put something thicker in front of the riffle to form more of a drop riffle effect for the first riffle. The way it's set up, think of the first riffle as a nugget trap because originally there was a piece of 3/8" punch plate extending over the first 2 riffles. You're going to catch all of your fine gold down in the armor weave. So if it builds up to the point of blocking the box behind the first riffle just sweep it down. That box was designed to be running 700gpm so I wouldn't worry about classifying it to less than 1". Find a spot to shovel straight into it and it will catch the gold just fine. Dave MacCraken designed that box to out perform all of the other boxes on the market at that time. It was a top shelf dredge box that you will have no worries with :occasion14:
