I found this buckle and was wondering as to the approximate age? Any ideas?

It measures about a little over an inch and a half long and a little over an inch wide. Appears to be brass. One of the tines has been bent and I don't want to risk straightening it out as it might break.

Just curious as to what it was attached to at one point.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Older looking Buckle

At 1"-by-1&1/2" size, you've most probably got a suspender-strap adjuster buckle. "The "style" of yours (very narrow sharp-tiipped spines for gripping-teeth) dates from the mid-1800s to approximately the end of that century. There are some very similar but somewhat smaller ones for adjusting a pants-waist strap (located at the back of the waist of the pants).

Kuger, I based my statement that Black651's buckle was "most probably" a suspender-buckle on his statement that it is "a little over an inch and a half long." The 1850s/60s-dated (and non-dated "Paris"-marked) pants-waist strap adjuster buckles with 3 daggerlike sharp teeth that I and others have dug are not that long/wide. They're more like 1 inch or 1-&-1/8 inch long/wide. So I figured Black651's buckle had to be intended for use on for a wider strap -- such as suspenders.

Thanks for the Clarification Cannon,I respect your opinion, and you may well be right, but given the frequency we dig these and never find a pair,I am led to beleive these never did serve as suspender hardwear, but thats just my observation.I have many period pictures showing them as slack adjusters but have never seen an image with one as a suspender buckle?
Have you ever found a pair in a camp??
