I have never seen this type. Found in an old farm field.

You are right on. They were used on WWII enlisted duty uniforms.
 

I want to edit the title, its supposed to be 13 not 23 stars.

This 13-stars button is classified by the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps as, "Button, Tack, M-1941" and since 1941 has been used on various military clothing and fabric equipment closures.

I remember my dad had a WWII shirt he wore (21st Engineers, North Africa and Italy) and I remembered the buttons he had on that shirt.
