I was really into metal detecting back in the late 1970's and early 1980's. I had a Whites 5000d/geb and had fantastic results with it. Well I finally sold it to have a family and venture out into the world. My family is now grown and I'm getting back into the hobby. I recently purchased another 5000D which I'm still familiar with. I was wondering if my old 5000D is still competitive enough against all this new technology. It always worked good in the past. What does it compare to with todays hi-tech models? My son wants to detect too, and he is looking at a Garrett ACE 250 or 300. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Herman

I still use a 5500d series3, that I bought new some 23 years ago. I wouldnt think of using another one. It has all the bells and whistles I need. If I ever got a back up, I would go with the Ace, from the good things I have read. (price and performance)

The older Whites 5000 series is close to the new ones in performance. However the battery usage is lots higher and the ability to find good targets near iron isn't as good. Depending on the ground conditions in your area or the increased electricial fields, a newer detector will handle these better.

The Garrett ACE 250 is a fine detector for a new comer or others that are tired of all the features that they don't understand anyway. It has good depth and is easy to operate.
