Looks like the bottom half of ye old crap house. Jump in and throw some of that black gold on out and see if you can find any old bottles. Swiz

Looks like the material lining the well is cement set, or is it solid? The one side is well worn, pardon the pun, as if a bucket or something round wore the inside lining down on one side more than the rest. Looks like a good area to detect.

The top has what looks like an old tin horn with a plate across it with a possible wooden door or someting. Stuck the camera through this opening showing the sandstone hole going down

Looks like a well to me. I can remember as a kid seeing a few square ones like that. One was in our yard. I don't know if my great grandfather dug it or if it was dug by someone before he got the land. There was another one just down the road at another old home that is gone now. Both have long since been filled in. Also remember as a kid watching one being dug. I was very young then but do remember looking down in it and seeing a black man that was a good friend of ours digging it. That one was square too. Thanks for this post. Those are some very good memories. :)

It doesn't look too deep unless it has ALOT of debris in there which is possible but , i'm thinking it's an old cistern for some reason.

Looks like a well. The reason that they are square is, its less work to dig. There is room to get a bucket filled with material up by the digger. With a round hole a lot more material would of had to been removed. Depending on the water table that well could go to China.

15 to 20 feet? That'd take a long time to fill. You need a football team and a few years supply of fiber. Then once its full you let it ferment for a few dozen years and then see if you can dig out any football rings. Swiz

stone?
Cement?

The inside looks like sandstone to me. I use to live on an acreage that had layers of sandstone just beneath the surface of the topsoil. We needed a septic tank for the house and dug it by chipping off layers of sandstone. It made a perfect septic tank and we didn't even have to buy a concrete one. Just made a concrete top and set it on top. If this well is layered sandstone, it is very easy to chip off layers in a straight line rather than trying to make it circular, hence the squared shape. The sandstone in our area was in layers about 8" thick and we just chipped them out with a jackhammer and tossed them out of the hole. Maybe? Monty

It is sandstone. And the snakes are out in full force this year... Its a little darker looking down in that hole without that camera flash. 8)

plus the opening in the tin looks to be the shape of a modernized outhouse. two holes close to one another (in case of frosty mornings)
