It says 1878 Saignelegier Chiantel Fondeur. 1878 doesn't necessarily mean that is how old it is but considering the coins etc that I have found near it, I would say its about right. Close to that same spot I found an 1877 seated liberty.

That to me seriously is a great find, I really need to get to Utah and hunt, im missing out.

My daughter found one in the pasture just like that and they said it was white brass. They have a very clear sound to them don't they! And it is a Swiss cow bell.

That is a very cool find! I lived in Utah for 10 years, but had no metal detector. I wish I would have! LOL!

Found this not too far from the bell.

we still bell our cattle as we have for generations....thats more of the goat bell size, but given the writing on it,I dont beleive it is either....cool bell though

I live in an older town really close to Utah Lake. Lots of history around the old lake.

more like a teachers bell...

I want to detect mountain meadows...bad karma though...

Unfortunately it's a national historical monument. They can confiscate your detector and even your car if caught.

Do you do a lot of diggin in Utah? I've only been doing it for about a year or so but am addicted. I need to find some good resources to find good spots. Any suggestions?

It was really close to an old homestead. It had a leather belt in the same hole. Not big enough for a cow. The clapper which was held in place by dirt is cool too. It's etched MerryChristmas on the outside and made in India on the inside. Really makes a great sound.
