I knew someone would want a picture of the back; I forgot to do one! I'll get right on that.

Okay, I'm trying to add pictures of the back!

Good news for you:
That SPECIFIC backmark, saying "Scovill Mfg. Co Waterbury" in RAISED lettering, when seen on a US Army "general service" Enlisted-men's button (your button), dates from the mid-1850s to 1865. So, although the version of army "general service" button you found was manufactured from 1854 to 1875, yours can only be from 1854 to 1865.

Even as late as 1938 there is no photo evidence of activity on this spot. An atlas of 1876 and topographical map of about 1900 indicate a home nearby. This was some sort of barn or outbuilding. Three old coins, several chits (?) a dog tax tag from 1906 or 08 (I don't recall which). Lots of iron, some brass, some glass. I'd love to find a bottle intact; I found the butt end of a small pontil yesterday. My dad grew up in this neighborhood and I doubt that he'd have known anything; unfortunately he's not available.

Nice civil war period button. There nice to find
