While stumbling around doing genealogical research on the military history of my great grandfather, I encountered some information in a diary. The reference is to a 100 mile march from Franklin, TN to an already used camp site on the banks of the Stones River near Eagleville, TN. Apparently the same unit had previously occupied the same camp some time in the recent past. Meaning of course, if the site can be located, it may have plenty of stuff in the ground.

Now my problem is after looking over a current topo map there is no mention of a Stones river near Eagleville. However there is the Harpeth River. Could this be the renaming for the Stones River?

More tidbits from the same letter mentions that the 100 mile journey was over the worst, rock-strewn pathway imaginable. Bringing to my mind that there could be a good bit of stopping along the way to repair wagons. Of course this knowledge may be purely academic since that pathway probably is now under a paved highway.

Anyway I thought I would prevail on my Tennessee metal detecting brothers for some insight on the possible campsite. Looking at a Google Earth image, it does not appear to be an area where progress has consumed much farmland.

I doubt I will ever get down that way to do any searching, so please let me know if you do find the area and send a pic or two of the unearthed goodies.

I'd counter reference the info by using the "Official Records Of The War of The Rebellion" @ Browse | Cornell University Library Making of America Collection.

They may have maps that will help you locate the area. I'm sure there will be Company Commander's notes that may help you on your quest.

On a side note an ancestor of mine was captured at the Battle Of Beans Station. I have a copy of his Oath of Allegiance back into the US.
