USED TREASURE MAGAZINES: FREE WAY TO RECYLCLE AND PROMOTE OUR INTERESTING HOBBY?..

A club member the other day gave me a whole box full of old Western & Eastern Treasure Magazines ----instead of tossing them after reading them, the ?light bulb? in my head went off - -

I am finding over time that the number of individuals who come to our meetings drops off and I thought of this nifty idea late last night while reading some of the old issues.

Here?s a great free way to get support for our hobby as well as possibly gaining new membership into your local detecting club.

We all go to various medical and dental clinics and wait prior to our appointment in their ?waiting areas?. Here you will find various ?outdated magazines? on their tables. Why not bring a copy of your old favourite treasure magazine and leave it with the rest of the magazines on the stack. This concept can actually be used for any ?hobby organization?.

Prior to going to your medical appointment, spend a little time on your word processor and create a 2 ? by 2 ? note about your Metal Detecting Club, when they meet, contact information etc, and then staple it to the bottom right hand corner of the front cover. Speak to the receptionist or your family doctor and ask them if it?s ?ok? that you could leave this ?complimentary copy? for their patients to read in the waiting area.

This sure beats reading that ?old TIME 1967 issue? or ?1953 Popular Mechanics? magazine that has been sitting there collecting dust for all eternity!!

Great idea, Marc. If nothing else, it'll be there when I come back for another visit (or not). I'd rather read it a hundred times than some of the other stuff laying around :)

Thats a great idea and i commend you for thinking of it, but heres my opinion.

The way i see it and i dont want to come off like a jack ass, but if the people are not coming back to your meetings then i say good riddence. They were not die hards, and not in for the long haul and probably moved on to their next trend of the week.

Every hobby has the trendies that come and go quickly because they lose interest or move onto something else because it's the "in thing" that week and thats what their friends are doing.

Spreading the word of our hobby is great and more power to you, but by doing so? you will also bring the people that might have just a short passing interest in the hobby and who will quickly move on.?

Now thats great for metal detector/ equipment sales and the business aspects of the hobby, but you will also have these same people that might be half heartedly into it out in the field possibly trespassing on private lands without permission, butchering parks and other grounds, detecting on places where it's off limits because they dont know any better and never thought of asking first, etc, etc, etc.

You can wield this like a double edged sword. On one hand you could be introducing future dedicated responsible members that will uphold the integrity of our beloved hobby, and on the other hand, assemble a pack of monsters that might do more harm to the image of metal detecting than good.

Just my two cents. Hope no one's offended, as i didnt set out to do so 8)?
