I found an old iron wheel today. It is about 36-40 inches in diameter, all metal. It has a strip of metal around the outside of the metal rim held on with what seemed to be rivets. It has metal "spokes" that are about 1.5 inches across and 3/4 inch wide. In the "hub" is a place that looks like a sprocket would fit inside, maybe on the axle. The hub is about 6-8 inches in diameter. Any ideas on what this may have been on. We thought maybe on an old tractor before tires with air? This was in sw Missouri on a hilltop deep in the woods. It was broken and probably replaced and discarded right where I found it.

Take it to my dad in Galena. He can probably tell you. Big yellow house on the hill. :)

I may do that, it is only about 10 miles from Galena. Thanks. Do you live near Galena?

From your description, I gather that the spokes are flat.

Here's a pic. Take a look at the rear wheels which sokes appear to be flat.

If it is a tractor wheel it would have had the "scallops" on the rim for traction.

Good Luck.

It looks close to the front wheels on that tractor but not quite the same. It did not have any cogs for traction. The center "hub" also has the "gear" teeth that must have been to drive or brake it. The teeth are on the inside of the hub and point towards the center.

Alot of the farm equipment on my Grandfathers farm had these metal wheels. I can remember sitting on a rake in the hay fields as he pulled me on his old Massey Ferguson. The rake had these wheels and a metal seat, He would give a yell and I would hit a foot peddle to raise the rake and make rows. Later we would come by pulling another ramp type machine and a wagon. I would be on the wagon with a pitchfork and stack the hay. Very tedious on a hot august day. I earned one dollar a load after we got it in the barn with a giant claw type device dropped on it and raised up to a rail at the top of the barn to move it to the loft. The good ol days.
