Found this piece of a toy plane in an old field. It has a number '7' on the tail. Does anyone know how old this toy may be?

I think what you have is a metal "race car" - not an airplane... IMO.

Best way to illustrate this is with a picture... I'm still searching for one that matches...

Picture is NOT of your's... just an example of what I'm talking about...

... Still looking for an ID... but it may hafta wait because all I have is the internet and no books... I do think you have a car though, and have seen a bunch that come close - but not the same

I think that this may be a variety of the Tootsietoy large Bluebird racer, c. 1932-41. There were various colors and tail numbers. Here's a red No. 2 for comparison:
