Hello, I absolutely would NOT electrolysis this pin!!!! It appears to still have some of the gold gilt left & seems to be in nice condition. My guess is that it would be military related, but I am no expert for sure. VERY COOL FIND no matter what!!!!!! :thumbsup:
 

Electrolysis? If that needs electrolysis most of my finds need the electric chair! ;D
 

I would Google "Texas Star Hat Pins".. Not sure of the period.. but there is a book on Texas Civil War relics maybe someone has a copy and can verify the period.. if it's Civil War... WOW!!!

Very interesting finds. With you saying its a button then it must be small. Or I would say it could be a badge, the back looks like it might of slid down in a shirt pocket.

It is a "period" Officers Hat Insignia. That is all i know right now...trying to find out more.
