Old Tag

I found this tag at a site of an old log structure in North Carolina. The text reads: " The PORTAGE AKRON OHIO 523 GRIP". It is 1 7/8" x 1 1/2" x 1/32 thick made of brass. Any ideas of what it is?

A grip was a small handheld suitcase. This was attached by a leather strap to the piece of luggage and the owner was given something with a matching number to use as a claim check. Probably used as part of the Hotel's shuttle service getting guests to and from the train station.

A "grip" was also an electrition. Perhaps a badge for an electrition who worked at the port? Monty
