Old style hinge of some sort?

Found this in an area of a small 1800's village. It is about 4 inches long, detailed, and pretty heavy. Is this a hinge of some sort? I would also love to get an era date on it if anyone might know?

whatcha got there is a thingamajiggy.they were popular from 2000 bc to present.They come in many shapes and compositions,but they all serve the same purpose.....

They either support or reinforce the whatchamacallit...of course that is unless it was attached to a victorian bluechemag.then most certainly it is a thingy
