I found this old jug down off the cape fear area. Trying to findout a little more anout it. All the jugs ive seen have been with blue designs, none with this brown. Also cant find any designs like this one. The rings around the neck may help locate the origin of the jug?

i wonder if that's how the cobalt looks after it's been submerged in the water (i'm assuming it was found in water based on your attire and barnacles on the jug, lol). Any markings on it?

It doesn't appear to beer or ginger beer bottle, without seeing the peice in person, I would lean towards a rum jug or a food storage bottle. However, given the location of where the bottle was found. Depending on the actual age of it..maybe I am stretching it a little but if it is a rum jug maybe Edward Teach has come into contact with it..stranger things have happened.

Just going by the ovoid shape suggests that your jug is most likely from the first half of the 19th century. I wish I could tell you more.

Is there a way to look Surf up and see his jug?

Hi Kmercer. Yes, I think if you scroll the link I sent you that shows surf's jug, you press on his name on the let hand side, and that will allow you t send him a private message. Hope this helps.

Sadly, I think I read where 'Surf" passed away earlier this year. I concur that your jug is in the 1800-1850 era. You should do a google search on Crocker Farm Auctions, the largest American stoneware research and auction firm. It is run by the Zipp family, very nice folks who will gladly tell you every thing there is to be known about your piece, as well as potential value. HH

redbeard, although I didn't know surf, I just read the entirety of his posts. He was obviously an intelligent and knowledable man. His passing is a loss to the forum. Good advice given in your previous post about Crocker Farm.
