Was out this morning at old foundation site and found an interesting silver coin. I am leaving on a trip and have to pack and run, so no time to photograph (I don't think it would come out well anyway). Here is description. It is about dime size and well worn flat on one side (can't read anything). Other side has crown at top, under crown is coat of arms/shield divided in four small box sections. Lower left box has a lion and others may have similar animals, hard to see. On either side of the shield is a column with a snake looking thing wrapped around the column in the middle of each column. Any thoughts, please advise. Thank you.

follow this link and scroll down about 3/4 of the way down the page. there is some info on spanish reales. they came in several different sizes but the design was the same on all of them.as tim said, it sounds like you have a half reale, which was the smallest denomination.can you read any of the writing on the back? it should say something like "HISPAN-ET-IND-M-F-F" . if there is a small "O" over the M, that is a mintmark saying that the coin was minted in mexico city.

Thank you! It is fifth coin down from the top, Santiago, Chile.

Something like this?

That's it, diggumup, thank you. Is that one reale?

:o Awesome find Bergie!! :o

Congrats!!!!

;)

I could be wrong but from the size description you gave, I would guess your coin is a half reale. I think the reales are larger (21.6mm)

Good going on the Spanish Silver!
