Hey guys,

Dug what I believe to be an early Spanish cob coin out of a river here in Charleston, SC that borders a site dating from the late 17th century. It was originally covered in a heavy black crust that I slowly worked away with small bursts of electrolysis. I outlined in blue what I believe looks like a raised cross impression. I've dug a 1655 Charles II cob in the past but it is quite thin in comparison. This coin is about the size and slightly thicker than a quarter. I did a streak, chemical test that did confirm it as >90% silver. Let me know what you think-

1536 to 1734 (alpha and omega for cobs)
Don....

The only thing I have to go on is this Charles II cob (1655-1700) that I found last year in the same area. The cuts are very similar, however the corroded one is much thicker. Maybe 1655 as well?

When you get back that far thickness is not even considered in the variable This is VERY crude technology e.g. Hammer a blob into a cob
