I went out today for a short while. I didn't stay long because them bugs are getting bad out there. Any way I found these old shotshell primers. Obviously these were from shotshell cartridges. These are the old school kind! The first one I found is from Peters, which is now Remington. Founded in 1887 near Cincinnati, Ohio. Remington bought Peters in 1934. So that one is dated between 1887 - 1934. :hello2:

The second shotshell primer is from Union Metallic Cartridge Co. (UMC). What makes this shotshell primer unique is that it has some of the color left on it. The color is a ''red-ish'' like color. I believe this shotshell primer is dated in the 1860s (Civil War time era, but I could be wrong). Today, UMC continues only for rifle and pistol cartridges for military use. -Don HH! :occasion14:

UMC was merged with Remington in 1912 to for Remington UMC and you can still buy UMC ammo today. the UMC is later than Civil war area not sure how much but.

Shotgun is a good place to starting on dating the head stamps,

In 1888, Winchester and UMC jointly purchased Remington. In 1896, UMC purchased Winchester's share of Remington, and then UMC was the sole owner of Remington.
UMC was originally formed to provide firearms and ammunition to the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War. UMC was reincorporated in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1867. UMC began to sell unloaded brass shotshells in 1868, which is said to be the first commercially available shotshell in the USA. Twenty years later, in 1888, UMC began to sell loaded shotshells.
UMC is the leading manufacturer's of military ammo. Yes, you can still buy UMC ammo.
