I found this in the same general vicinity as two large cents. It looks if your looking at the pic of the rear the rectangular like piece is broken off on the right side. Any idea what this is?

Looks like it's military, too. I believe French. Cannot confirm how old...

Here's a pic from another Tnet thread

Wow, that’s beautiful. Can you provide the link to that other thread?

Not sure if it will be much help to you, but here it is. CBG discussed age of the button posted based on it's back mark, which we obviously don't have in your case. Yours appears to be a different material too. I think they were used by different countries, and not just on buttons. Here's another thread: http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/what/18708-2-old-buttons.html

Might want to google "flaming bomb" and see if you can find anything that looks similar to what you have. I don't think it's super old...probably WWI/WWII

Does it have a letter in the center of the circle or am I just seeing things?

It’s a 1910’s WW1 French Grenadier Regiment Tunic Button. Exploding grenade with flames coming out. Very cool!

Here is another picture of the detail. It does appear to have some sort of ornate design on the grenade that I have not seen in any of the pictures of that button in my google search. Can anyone tell what makes this button different? Thanks for all the input so far!

Can you show a picture from the side? It’s not quite button-like is it? To clarify something mentioned earlier, a button cover is a separate item from the button itself, going over it to fancy something up, like these for shoes: 66210659-DA84-4EB1-B6F2-21107D8DEAD1.jpeg7BEE0B19-9102-4E9A-92E4-C0E7B37882D0.jpeg

Hard to be sure of the detail, but it’s close to the Canadian Grenadier Guards:

Yes, it’s definitely the same design. And makes sense do to it being found in NY. I just haven’t been able to find a picture of a button with that design yet. I’m sure it’s out there. If anyone can find it please let me know.

No, I definitely did not first think it was a button because of the back piece. But I’m new here and I’ve not dug a button cover before, so I don’t really know, still learning. Could it be a clip or badge of of some sort?

This is a pic of cap badge that I found. It looks similar to the back...

It is the center portion of a wreath buckle.

It look very similar especially the grainy background that the grenade is on. The only thing that’s throwing me off is that my piece is completely circular. In the pic of the front part of the belt you can see that it’s not completely circular. I think it’s the center part of the buckle, but maybe just not that exact one? Nice find!
