Was told by an expert that the design is Spanish. It is old! Now, I need to figure how to clean it without damaging it in the process! The metal seems to be copper and silver.

It does look old. Although it also looks like it was electroplated :-\

When did electroplating started being done?

Did some research on electroplating. It was invented in 1805. Silver electroplating patents were issued in 1840s. In 1857 electroplating was used on costume jewelry.

I am not sure whether you are hunting on the florida coast but that ring certainly looks like an old spanish shipwreck treasure to me. Very nice find. I would get that appraised when you are done cleaning it. Great find well done

He is hunting Floridas coast but the old Spaniards didnt use electroplating. Hard to tell by just a pic. Im assuming it is copper.

You find a lot of older stuff on the beach, Moe.

I think this topic should be moved to the cleaning and preservation threads. You already know What it is, and you seem to know how old it is...

So the question remains of how to clean.

A fellow gave a great set of detailed instructions and I've used the procedure with good results that are described on treasurebeachesreport.blogspot.com. It's the Dec. 30, 2008 post.

Florida became British around 1820. Being electroplated means its after the 1850's.
What beach was this found on Moe? I know you usually hunt north of the Treasure Coast. Do you think it is shipwreck or not? Any known wrecks in the area? Was this beach used in the mid-1800's? Might help with the ID.

Thanks to all for the interesting replies!

The ring was found in Northeast Florida. There are stories of shipwrecks all along this coastline. I believe the ring is older than 1850s. The expert that saw the ring was sure it is older. What looks like plating may not be plating. The ring seems too big for a lady's small fingers.

Happy Hunting!

Did further research and discovered that silver-copper plating was being done in 1750s in Europe. Plating started in mid 1600s and copper plating was widespread in 1700s.
