Went out yesterday for a bit.theres a lot of deep signals 70's and 8O's with a fair amount of iron. Going to go back when the snow is gone and it's easier to dig. I found what I think is a old rifle case.if I had to guess,I'd say it's a center fire 58 cal. On the bottom I think it has a F 5 8 or R58

One similar to that was posted here and pistol pete IDed it as a 45-70 inside primed, also called Benet priming. Yours could be a 50-70 if it,s as big as you say. Some measurements of the rim diameter, inside diameter and length would be helpful.I don,t have anything yet on the case markings. The general area of where you found it is always helpful too.

Got a little something for you. www.oldammo.com-picture page, March 2006.Scroll down to-More of those interesting 45-70 headstamps. Gives a good history of the use of Benet priming and several pix of the cartridges with headstamp examples.Dates too. May help you out. If that don,t do it,just put in a search for 45-70 and 50-70 Benet primed cartridges. Images.Lots of examples shown.I used yahoo, but it should work on any search engine.Lots of websites for cartridge ID too.Hope this helps you and you positively ID your case.

I think it is a 45-70 found something where this fella had a couple unfired Benet primed 45-70 rounds. Each having different head stamps. I believe the head strap on the one I found was RF581, which was the same head stamp of one of his rounds
