In the early 20th century, the city was served by three railroads, the Reading, the Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley, according to the Joseph Henry Zerbey History of Pottsville and Schuylkill County.
But over time, transportation and passenger train services were discontinued. Passenger train service between Pottsville and Reading, the only remaining train service in the city, ended in April 1981 as demand declined, according to The Republican-Herald archives.
Electric trolley service in Pottsville stopped in 1932, according to the Zerbey History.
Over the years, as the city paved more and more of its streets, it simply covered over the tracks, according to Dr. Peter Yasenchak, executive director of the Historical Society of Schuylkill County
