Though this was pretty neat went out detecting and found on accident another site. Never found a date nail before but knew instantly I had found one then another and another and another. They rang up on my detector and its the reason i found the spot. 1587275232179-1778433668.jpg1587275328841-350961295.jpg1587275380267-1144214609.jpg15872754511791190140701.jpg

Very interesting find. While I sense why dated nails were used in railroad ties, I look forward to reading some comments from those who know the specifics.

You've got some pretty old ones there. The oldest one I have is '31. I think they stopped using them around WW2. Gary

I assume its for maintenance reason, so they know the date of the production.

I have a number of nails an old lady gave me in Missouri back in the 70. She had a bucket of them.

What was the condition of the old ties? In what state were these found?

Date nails are always fun to find/collect. I have found a number of them here along the old Santa Fe RR main line. Most of the ones I have found are from the 1920's.

you've got some nice oldies there. My Dad had a lot from some years he worked with his companies rail division. I've got them now and I think the oldest I've got is 1898 or 1899

Those are the old ones thats really cool I saw a post a while ago about people collecting those good job stay safe out there Tommy

Those are cool. I live near an old rail line that was started in the mid 1800's and was used until 1948 and is now a bridle path. I had just looked it up today and had just about decided to give it a try.
Now you've given me no choice. :)

I have found two of those nails, dated 27 & 31, except mine came from telephone poles. Congrats on all of yours. Those are nice finds.
