I dug this old knife at a 1798 homestead today. I have dug a few of these old knifes. Anybody know how to date them? I can't seem to find any info on identifying old style pocket knifes online. This one says "American Knife" on it the other one I dug on this property is the same style and say's "US" with little stars all the way around the handle. I assume they are 1800's but would love to ID them somehow.

You did better than me. I couldn't even find that? Thanks You would think there would be a web site on these old knives?

You'd think there would be a site and it would just be a quick search. I'm going to look into it a little further.

My hunch is that this knife dates from the earlier period of dates listed above. The construction of it is identical to many contemporaneous knives bearing 1860s patriotic slogans, eulogies of the dead president Lincoln, etc.

Finding an early knife like this is much rarer than finding a Seated coin! Great find!

hmm ill have to soak my most recent knife to see if i can find anything on it. cool stuff!! willy

How the heck would you go about cleaning these? The blade is steel, right? Electrolysis?

Perhaps the only way might be to wait and see if the two metal side pieces separate from the rusty iron over time, then put them together like the one in the post I gave the link for above. I wouldn't recommend electrolysis.
