how old is this pic?

The frame is probably newer than the photo. The photo looks to be from the 1890's/1900. What is the photo on? Paper, glass, or metal. I'm guessing paper, which is what the date is for.

The hat is called a "Montana Peak" style, popular with cowboys in the late 1800's. I don't think he's a cowboy with a bow tie, so that leaves turn of the century cavalry
trooper, Boy Scout leader, Forest Ranger or perhaps a police officer, or Canadian Mountie. ??? Again, the bow tie kind of rules out trooper or Mountie. The picture appears
to be a cabinet card, which would date it possibly as late as the mid 1920's. Cabinet cards were introduced in the 1860,s and in the 80's and 90's were very popular. But
to me the hat dates it around 1900 or later. Just an old man's swag.

Just looking at the frame again. My wife has a picture of her parents in a frame like yours, it dates to the early 20's, so I'm thinking that would be a close guess.
