Old Permission - Field 3 - Day 6 - Stone Age Hand Axe, Roman Silver & More...

Started the day off with a bucket lister find! I locked my bike on the edge of the field, did 2 steps in & spotted a Stone Hand Axe! Westfront finds these, but this is my first one. I'm not even sure if its Mesolithic (would be my oldest ever find) or Neolithic? It looks similar to this one;

Which ever it is, it really started the day on a high. It quickly followed with a Denarius on my 2nd dig & first run. This is the coin I was hoping for & it took many acres of gridding to finally get it.

Is that coin part of a Maundy set?

There is a standalone 3 pence that is the same as the Maundy set, so we will never know which it is. What builds its case as being Maundy is that these were connected to 'Touch Pieces'. Read up on it but being holed could point towards the person keeping it as a Holy connection/protection. Worth more spiritually than its face value. It nice to think that Will III might have touched this coin/set of coins as he was handing them out.

I've collected coins since I was 9 years old & I haven't got one in my collection. Every dealer I have spoken to have very little stock from this period, particularly for the 3pences, its a known difficult area to find.

Just be sure to stay doen south though. Up here in the north of England I'd be lucky to find what those southerners seem to haul in one session over the course of a month and countless hours in the field.

That flint looks golden colored where the patina is missing. I’m a knapper but no expert on UK flint, but I can’t remember that color material from UK. It could be Le Grand-Pressigny from France. The golden color would match that closely.
