Metal Detecting
I went to an old school that has been closed down for a long time and in bad shape from neglect. The place looks creepy, especially this time of the year. Everything just seemed...dead. The smell of decay was in the air, and a strong musty smell hung in the air close to the school walls and windows even with the breeze rustling what little leaves still hung from the twisted and gnarled trees. There was not much of a grassy area, and thorn bushes covered the rest. Thorn bushes were like claws and tentacles, grabbing at my clothes and wrapping themselves around the detector shaft at every swing. The grassy area was limited due to sidewalks and pavement, from the school being located in an old part of the steel mill town which produced bridges and the landing crafts, LST-542, that were used in WWII Asian/Pacific theater.
I found a decent amount of clad, including a 13 penny coin-spill. The oldest coin being a 1961 Canadian cent. I was using my Etrac and picked up nothing too deep. The coins I did find were all at 2" or less. I am imagining that the grassy area around the school was cleaned out previously by metal detectors. Not hard to do with the limited grass area. I covered the entire area pretty good in less than an hour.
I got some good pictures of the school with my smartphone, as I got word, it was scheduled for demolition. When I got home and transfered the pictures on my laptop, I noticed something every odd in one of them. If you look carefully, on the picture of the front of the school, you can notice an almost transparent spooky figure in the doorway. To me, it looks like it is standing sideways and looking through at me. In the hour I was there, no one was around. In fact, the door on the other side of the building leads to a sloped area, big fence, and about a 20 foot drop down onto a road below. The building and window in the background, looking through the door, are the 3rd story. The figure would have had to walk by me and around the building. wierd, huh?

That place looks like it would have been near the top of everybody's list of "must detect " back in the 60's and 70's so the "low hanging fruit "
may well have been plucked , but obviously there will be a couple of goodies hiding in there .

Maybe it's good it 's going to be demolished, it will give you a whole lot of detecting space once the building is gone and brushed removed. Nice finds HH!
