I found this while metal detecting and was wonder if this is a modern thing or old. It is not magnetic and is polished. If this is old any info would be great.
That looks to me like 'Dalmatian Stone', also known as 'Dalmatian Jasper,' although its not a jasper in a true geological sense. It carves easily and very readily takes on a high polish when tumbled and so is a favourite in lapidary shops for production of beads and baubles... especially since it also readily picks up dye and so can be transformed into bright colours. It's a particular favourite in 'new age' shops, where it's commonly sold as shaped and tumbled pebbles with various 'healing' properties alleged for it.
Almost all of it comes from Chihuahua in Mexico, and I don't think you'll find it anywhere near Vermont. I would say 'modern'.
