I have wanted to try metal detecting for a long time but never seemed to have the time. Can't say why I just pulled the trigger at 59 years young other than getting some extra exercise after having a knee replaced (years of highly competitive tennis caught up). Thankfully money was not an object on buying a detector so I did a lot of research and settled on a Teknetics T2. I also got the Garrett Pin Pointer Pro and a set of Garrett Head Phones. I've been "practicing" in my back & front yards and it's FULL of trash. What I'm trying to figure out is how most efficiently adjust the T2 for discrimination/sensitivity/tones to help eliminate the trash. I've tried the fastgrab as well as manual ground balance to see if I can fine tune this beast. There seems to be a LOT of technique and experience when to determine to dig or not. I don't mind digging right now because it's practice, but I kind of get tired of digging up junk. I did try my little "treasure garden" with coins/jewelry to get use to the tones but so far that hasn't helped. Before I head out to the local parks (which I found are legal to use metal detectors) I wonder if there are any other tips/settings for old newbies like myself. I'm an engineer by trade (retired auto engineer ... then taught college .. then back to work full time when a excellent job fell in to my lap) so I understand the technical aspect of metal detecting and how things work.. it's the tricks of the trade I need to learn! Thanks for anyone who is willing to share their valuable experience.
