Script I infantry button, 1810’s-20’s, I believe. The star belongs at the bottom.

Do you by chance know what the letter stands for?

Yes, with the star at the bottom it is a letter I, in script form, which stands for Infantry.

Do some reading about Fort Clairborne and Dr. John Sibley in Natchitoches. Those were the very early days of American occupation of the Louisiana Territory.

Did your uncle mention what type of place he found it? I've found a number of military buttons, including Infantry, in the Natchitoches area but never one with a script design like that. Just curious as to what he pulled them out of?
