Looks to be a General Staff Officer button.

Hey thanks for the tip. It doesn't seem right something that old could be up here. It most likely is something else. Here is the pic from that site suggested. Not the same button but close. Thanks for your valuable input. Now I must treasure hunt and throw this button in the drawer of finds to ponder. It seems the rim of the button is wider.

General staff buttons were used in this area up until the Span Am war. Ft. Steilacoom was operational until the late 1800's. Veterans groups, GAR units, etc also used them. Where in Tacoma did you find it. I'm curious if it was close to the Ft.

General service buttons were made by many different companies for many years - even today. There will be slight differences in them especially in a 3-piece like this one. Soldiers returning to the area would bring them back from all over. The person might have lived there but the button saw action somewhere else. It is the Eagle that tells you more than the crimped edge size. They were made so the eagle design was the same but the contracts may not have been specific enough to determine the crimped edge size. There are YEARS and YEARS of general service buttons out there. If the backmark was still there, you could narrow it to a pretty tight date range but other little things may not help that much.

To all who posted comments,
Thanks for the responses on this button. I really appreciate the comments. I live in North Tacoma and the house where I found it is North Tacoma. Sounds like the button, regardless of the back missing, has a few years on it. Thanks again.

Here's one that's close.

Antique US Army military uniform button. Approximately 7/8". Very rounded button. Officer, General Staff type. 24 stars around the circumference. The American Eagle is in the center with a shield on his breast, lined field. Holding 4 arrows in it's right talon and grain in the other. 7 stars on on its center shield. Backmark: Goodwin Pat July 27 1875. Two piece construction with a rim holding the pieces together. Similiar to GS13C in Albert's. Condition is good, lightly worn and a few scratches.

The shield (flat top) on the button is more like button listed Albert's 13E.
