Picked this up yesterday...I like old Halloween stuff and figured it was cheap enough.

Appears to be a paper mask with nice color, though very brittle.

Missing some sections of hair and cracked in spots.

Any idea of the age and if it is indeed a Halloween mask?

I don't know what it is, but I don't think it has to do with halloween. I would call it black americana folk art mask and do some research on it.

Definitely Voodoo! Bury it a sack made of corn husks sprinkled with the blood of a chicken. You must bury it at exactly at midnight during the dark of the moon, under an elm tree on the west side ten paces from the trunk. You will be cursed if you do not this. I am sure I will be cursed when you read this! :)

I this page that has a couple similar blackface masks, down to the grey facial hair. They're both listed as "Halloween Mask, c.1940s" near the bottom of the page in the "Additional Tom Imagery" section. I didn't see anything mentioning Halloween in the article though (nor do I know how reputable the site is).

But your mask looks like a much higher-quality piece. And with the yellow decorations it makes me think more of Mardi Gras or Carnaval than Halloween.
