I found this at the corner of a stone foundation of a long gone farmhouse. Is it just a foundation patch? Weighs 57g.

It looks like a wedge made to hold lead flashing in a chase!

Or used to hold the gun flint in place :o
Wow Buckles, how would that work? And at about 2 ounces of lead?
I have seen pics of leather or cloth 'patches' holding flints.
I hope it is what you say - that's much more interesting than a roofing wedge :headbang:

Mike,

They used lead as well as leather or cloth. A lead wrapper from a flint usually looks like a doubled-over piece of lead, flattened, with a distinct "notch" cut into the side with the fold (this notch accomodated the turn screw on the pincers).

Regards,

Now wouldn't that be something!

I believe the house foundation might date to the 1770s -based on local history of whom I know were the owners - but I haven't really found much in the way of artifacts to support that early date.
