Hello Tnet,

Found this lead button some weeks ago. Button’s width is 17 mm, and the height 5mm. Material is some lead alloy. Weights about 7 grams. Object is found in the Netherlands in a context dating from the 19th c. to the roman time. Anybody who knows how old it can be ? IMG_5267.webp

IMG_5266.webp

It looks at least 1700s but could be a lot older.

Are you sure it’s lead? Looks like pewter to me

As I stated its probably a lead alloy. feels very heavy for its side. pure pewter objects are much more preserved in the clay ground here. The dirt on it seams caked in and almost impossible to remove without hurthing the patina.

Is there a way how I can test from wich material it’s made op.

Thanks for your reply Cru,

Do you by chance have an example ? Not trying to discredit you but i’ve never found buttons like these in a 18th c context. I was thinking late mediëval buy cant find a fit example..

Found turns of 18th C examples similar although this could easily be 17th C.
