I found this copper object recently. I can't make out anything on it. It is the same diameter as the large cent pictured. I found it near an old site dating back to the 1840's. My question is what are the odds that this is a large cent? Is it common to find them worn or corroded to the point that there is no detail remaining?

Thank you

I think odds are pretty good that it's a large cent. Have you tried to clean it any?

Not that*I* will ever find one, but the large cents that do show up here usually have very faint detail, nothing at all, near mint condition, or anywhere in between! do you have anyway to weigh it pretty precisely ?

I'd say Large Cent or Colonial Copper.

Perhaps if you Wet or oil it
And hold it in the Light or Sun
at the correct Angle you can see enough
for an ID

It's a large cent bloo. Odds are by the wear and letter size that it's a matron head (1829-37) but it's difficult to see from the scan.

Looking at it i'm saying it has to be the braided hair large cent 1840-1857. I say this because the 1808-1839 large cents had the one cent underlined on the reverse and the large cent's from earlier had large bows on the ribbons.

Glad you can see detail on the coin on the RIGHT, since he is asking about that one and not the Large Cent on the left.

The photo is not clear enough to say what it is for sure, it is copper coin for sure, odds are a Large Cent but just not enough information on the coin or quality of photograph and cleaning to make a solid judgement..

Agreed. Sometimes these big cents take a beating and end up like that. Judging by the date of the site as you mentioned, odds are it is a large cent....It's a bummer with the oldies sometimes you'll never know

For the item on the right, I can see the form of the wreath, and make out where the word "CENT" is (the "C" and the "T" are the most visible letters). It looks like there may be another word above where the "ONE" should be, so it may be a Hard Times Token. For an HTT, that word is typically "NOT", but what I see does not appear to match that word. It really looks to be more like "ONE", but the space between the two words is larger than what I would expect to see on a U.S. large cent. The top of the coin/token reverse is at between 10 and 11 o'clock in the picture. I'd say give it a cleaning, and post new pics of both sides.
