I posted this todays finds, but since I am not sure what it is figured I would post it here as well. I found this in a very large rock shelter here in Eastern Kentucky. There was a lot of Civil War activity in this area and a friend of mine found a bayonet in the same shelter. Don't know if its Civil War but it looks old. I'm horrible at identifying things. Any help is appreciated.

By the size, looks like an eating utensil. Looks to be around that time period. By the way, very nice quilt.

Thanks Tennessee. Im hoping it's from the Civil War period. It is small probably about five inches for the total length. My wife's great grandmother made that quilt.

I can't say if this knife would had been carried in the Civil War or not, but this knife you have is a drop point design with a thick point and not good for piercing but is very common for a field skinning knife and has been around for a long time.
The clip point knife with a thinner and sharper point would probably been more practical to use in the CW war and this type is the design the bowie knife was used from.

Nova stated about all I can. What is interesting to me is if the handle tang was cut down that short?I have found spoons with the handles shortened and always figured they could be stowed easier that way?

I think I would try electrolysis on that knife. It looks similar to some crudely fashioned bone saws I've seen yet no teeth.

Nice knife, great find. Can't help thinking though if I put that knife on my wife's quilt I'd soon be pulling out of my chest! Lol
