Old knife sheeth? Please help iD

I can't get a positive it on the piece. It looks like a holder for a large knife to me but any guesses/suggestions are appreciated. It's been driving me nuts trying to figure this one out.

I think HuntiDog is spot on. The tangs are still intact. they would have been perpendicular to the trim, insert into slots in the car body and bent back to secure the trim in place. Good "what is it " though.

What kind of car? Older I'm assuming?
