Hello Tnet,
After a long day walking on grass field nearby a old town called 'megen' here in the Netherlands I finally found a producing field. I found 2 coins from 1883 and 1901 and even a 'duit'
Then These strange things turned up.

The first item is heavy and made of lead, i'm not even close to know what it could be. Btw.. I hit it hard with my shovel..

The second is brass I think and probaly a broken shoe buckle but not sure.. Any idea what is is and the date ?

The second is my first ever button in about 5 months of metal detecting...
I think its made out of brass and I cant find any writing on the backside. Any idea how old ??

And sorry for my broken english, it isn't my mother tongue.

I can confirm the second item is a broken shoe buckle. I would say late 18th century.
Your button is probably early 19th century.
Nice Finds!

That was the only piece I recognized as well... shoe buckle tongue. :laughing7:
The one-piece button looks to be late 18thc.

I wonder if the mystery item might be a ‘reliquary’. These things were frequently cast from lead or pewter and had a ‘window’ within which a religious relic was sandwiched between glass. A small fragment of cloth, bone, hair or whatever claimed/believed to be from some Saint or other notable religious person. They came in a variety of small sizes, both as pendants and portable pocket items.

This kind of thing. This one (missing its glass) also contained a “lamb of God” as a separate piece which might have enclosed the relic. It’s 26 x 15mm but, as I said, they come in a variety of sizes and with different sizes and shapes of the aperture.

On your item, although it’s very corroded, there appears to be something resembling a robed figure with outstretched arms… a Saint, or Jesus perhaps?
