does anyone know anything about this insulator? It was laying on top the ground in the field I was detecting today, amazing the tractor plow never broke it up. Any info would be appreciated.

I want to send out a thanks to Bob "glassdigger" he sent me to an expert on insulators, sent him pics of mine and he said with no chips he would give me $125 bucks for it. However, being the honest guy I am (I try..lol) I informed him there was some chips not shown in the photo, and I took pics of all the chips and sent him new pics, he just gave me $85 bucks for it, even with the chips!!!!! woohooooo, free money just laying in the field!!!!!!

Nice porcelain insulator

Could you post the height and width? According to the "Porcelain Insulators Guide Book for Collectors" (third edition, Jack H. Tod) you might have a U-55.

The U-55 was valued @ $100 in 1988
it is 3" tall, width is 2 1/4 approx. There is not date marked on it anywhere like all the ones in the link above, only marking is on top shown in my pic

That's a great insulator. I know the place where it was manufactured. Used to live near there myself and had a few friends in the town. There's a decent bar/restaurant just across the street. The company is still in business, still producing insulators. I suspect it would be possible to get info about it directly from the manufacturer. It certainly is a slice of history and I wish I was the one who found it.

100$ is just a drop in the bucket compared to what some are worth!

Have things changed? I have a bunch of multi-color Hemmys and other misc insulators, people want me to pay THEM to take 'em lol!

It depends on the insulator of course  I've sold glass insulators that were broken nearly in half for well over $100!

Re: Old insulator found in field while detecting..any info?

I contacted Elton Gish who is an expert on insulators, he emailed me back with this:

The insulator is U-55 made circa 1902. Super find laying on the ground. Value is about $100-125.
