I am looking to try and date this horseshoe I found yesterday.

Here are the details:
• It has 4 holes, 1 with a nail
• It has a shallow calkin
• It has a fullering that the holes sit in
• It is about 3 ½” from end to end

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

It is dang near impossible to date a horseshoe.

Yours is probably 19th century due to the "turn up" at the end of the shoe. Earlier shoes tended to be wider, and later ones later had that bar at the horse's toe. If it's cleaned up, and we can see if there is a recessed channel, that might help, but Creskol is correct. They are tough to date. I find this style on Civil War sites.

Understood. Believe it or not, that helps. I won't waste anymore time searching. Thank you all.

Thanks i have that book. What is your guess as to which one it is ad a rough date?

I’d have to say number 8 , it’s probable more modern than you think, the corrosion plays a pretty big part . If it was old it would have been less corroded , not iron but a mix of metals= less corrosion. Just my opinion..

Keep looking , Son. If you want a date with a horseshoe, there are better looking ones out there, that are not quite so used up.
