Old Home Site - LC & a Crotal Bell *Updated Pics*

I hit an old house site for 3hrs today that I'm pretty sure has never seen a detector before, the only thing missing here were silver coins! :dontknow: I did find a nice early crotal bell and I say 'early' because it has the makers initials cast into the base. The problem is the amount of corrosion on the body makes it hard to see what the initials are. I also found a 1920 Canadian LC and a large brass ring! I just had to take a picture of the ring coming out of the ground, as I thought it might be something special . . . wrong again! :laughing7:

I currently have the crotal bell and the brass ring in the tumbler to try and get more detail off the bell, I'll post before and after pics of these tomorrow after 12 - 24 hours of tumbling. I was only able to detect about 2/3 of the lawn before it started to rain, so I'll head back again tomorrow for a few hours and will post anything interesting! Total cash found $2.70.

*Update* I have just posted 'cleaned' pics of the crotal bell and the bronze ring following 12hrs of tumbling!

Thanks for looking,
Dave

Nice crotal bell! I found a bunch last year but none this year. Always enjoy seeing them come out of the ground but even more after they are cleaned and ringing.

A couple of nice finds there for sure, but I think my fav is the Jeep. I had a jeep for 20 years and would love to have one again. Who knows maybe in a few years. Anyway getting back to your finds, here is a good source of info on the bells.

Keep at it there has to be some silver in that yard somewhere.

Thanks for your post Greylock!
I love crotal bells also and as you said, "even more after they are cleaned and ringing"!

I almost bought a '73 Jeep back in 1985 when I was 21, it was a beater and I just wanted it to do some off-roading. But my Dad said that we didn't have enough room in the driveway for my motorcycle and a Jeep! :crybaby2: I still regret not having bought it and I think the guy was only asking $2000 for it!

Thanks for the link on American crotal bells Dave, I've bookmarked it.
I went back to the site again today and there wasn't any silver, just a lot more Hot Wheels!

I too like finding crotals..I has a Seth North makers mark on one...but most I find have size numbers. Great finds.

That bell is cool!!! Awesome find

Great finds! Congrats and HH!

Man, that bell and ring cleaned up really good. What are you using in your tumbler? Did you spray them with clear or anything? They look great.

Thanks for your post Brian. I've found a large #6 size crotal last year, it has the makers marks on it as well but I've never researched it. :dontknow: I'll post a pic of the bell and the marks on it at the end of this post!

Thanks very much for the kind words Dave! I use a Lortone 45C tumbler with 1/4 - 1/2 aquarium gravel. I put in a squirt of liquid dish soap and tumble for 12hrs. I change the slurry every 12hrs and check the relics to see if they need more time. I don't 'seal' the metal with anything, this is exactly how it come out. I tumble just about everything I find with hard to remove or stubborn corrosion that won't come off with a soft bristle brush. I'm currently tumbling a bunch of iron finds that I'd like to keep . . . (complete) square & rose head nails, iron strap ends and an iron coat hook that I found at the Myrtle School site.

Here are a couple of pics of the #6 crotal bell and a #1 bell I found at the same site last year. I found 3 pieces of the #6 last year and the rest of it this year, I then glued it back together . . . I'm only missing one small section. :sad10:

Always like finding bells, nice finds

Getting a bell and a LC is an alright day out, beats getting skunked for sure. The landscape in front of the house looks almost too flat, so maybe things have been landscaped in the past.

I'm thinking the same thing J. I'll probably go back and re-grid the yard in the opposite direction, just to see if anything else turns up! :dontknow:

Man I'd be happy too if I'd found what you've found this year so far! :o
Thanks for your post Evolution!
