Ok. Pretty sure I know what it is. Found in an area with history to mid 1700s. Based on other things found I’m guessing it was a shed/shop. My question is….looking at the striking end of the hammer it looks like a butcher block/chess board. Did they make hammers in the past by heat welding square stock together, or is that for another purpose? Also, any guesses on age would be appreciated.

I'm not sure how in was constructed, but I'm leaning towards it being a 100yr.+/- old stone masons bush or bushing hammer. I use to peddle a bush tool for a pneumatic hammer during my days of being a territory rep for Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico for Brunner & Lay who are makers of all types of pneumatic jackhammer tools and rock drilling accessories. I had 258 actively buying customers in the way of equipment rental yards, construction suppliers and hardrock mines. That was many hours of windshield time and over 50k miles a year driving.
