Hey Dadzilla, You probably have a small cobbler's hammer, would be my guess.
 

thanks for the reply Fossis, thats kinda what I thought , at another site on our property about 1/2 mile from where the hammer was found we found shoe hasps, I wonder if they are related ? the hammer site is older i think that hasp site there were houses at both places at differant times dating back to late 1800's early 1900,s

I remember a small hammer like that from when I was young. [long time ago] They were just called "Tack Hammers" Used for light work like brads, carpet tacks, etc.
