I was detecting at an old late 1800s gold mining ghost town and hit on a little honey hole of assorted bullet casings , lots of them in different calibers see picture for examples of the different types . About 35 of them all in about a 1 square foot area. In the mix I found these two pieces that I am pretty sure are some type or gun parts , can anyone knowledgeable about old firearms help ID them?
The shell casings in the picture are , 44WCF, 40-70 , 40-70 SS, 45-90 , what looks like 16 or 20 gauge shot shell with metal casing and several that I have yet to identify (I will ask for help on those in another thread) .
One odd thing is that many of the casings have different headstamps and many without headstamps, some with live primers , some fired , some missing primers, some cracked ect. My best guess is that it was a small gunsmith shop or something but who knows. I cant wait to go back , I think I just scratched the surface there.
Unfortunately the sun was setting and my girlfriend was getting antsy to leave considering we still had about a five mile hike back in the dark with no trail , and it did get dark , pitch black with no stars or moon light . She wasnt very happy about it to say the least , in fact I told her by the time we get back to the vehicle she was gonna be pissed! That was very true , but I also told her that later she would reflect back on it and what a great adventure it was and that was also very true. I am used to doing that kind of stuff all the time so luckily she trusts me. I dont blame her though and she did awesome! it also probably didnt help all the huge piles of bear scat we saw on the way in or me mentioning the giant Sasquatch sightings in the area
Anyway Thanks for any help on the IDs
