This is shaped an awfully lot like an ingot. I believe I see an assayer stamp that is ofcourse so old it can barely be made out. I believe it says 1422 and alot of other numbers and names.
From all my reading on here I don,t think gold tarnishes like that.Could be wrong, often am! Maybe silver? Hit it with a file or grinder and see what,s underneath. Or take it to an assayer to know for sure.

Lead ingot maybe I want to see all the jewelry in the case beneath it..lol

Nothing baits you folks in like a picture of a rock posted by a brand new profile. I’d say “gotcha!”, but I’m not responsible for the bait. Reminds me a lot like the 24K gold thread not long ago. Can I get a like from the OP?

What,s the point of this? Someone posted and asked what this was. Folks answered with some suggestions. How is that being "baited"? Again, what,s the point?

Gold is not brittle, black, has crystallized alloy.
So it might be magnesium even.
Grind/file spray with Vinegar.
Foams up then that is what you have.
If not, a zinc/lead alloy.
Go to a pawn shop they'll test.
Scrap yard XRF tester will confirm is not gold.

Thank you for sharing your item. It appears from your pictures to be broken. If so, could you seperate the two pieces and take a picture for us of the inside?
And a close up of the shiny material on the end as well as the other side.
It appears the item has a thick dark coating. Thanks.

As well as the pictures I asked for, if possible, a little details on the item would help. How you obtained it. Thank you.

You have been around here long enough you should be able to recognize this flavor of post. You will not get answers, you will not get a photo of numbers and names stamped into this gold ingot. If you do not think shenanigans happen around here, you should pay a little more attention.

Gold is not brittle and black. Why would you take it to a pawn shop or scrap yard to have it tested? The gold that comes from the earth is millions of years old..no signs of becoming black and brittle. Then we are supposed to believe that someone thinks an assayer graded it for purity? Come on folks!
